By Any Other Name

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose/ By any other name would smell as sweet." -Juliet Capulet

I was thinking today about how The Ex changed The Kid's last name. When my husband showed up to the court room on that day, she said, "We're his family. He's taking our last name."
The Husband, not wanting to fight anymore, allowed his son to change his name. Then spent the night in my arms, feeling robbed of something he couldn't quite put his finger on.
When The Kid was born, The Ex lived with her parents. They refused to let the new baby have his father's name, threatening to revoke all support. After they were married, when The Kid was 2, his name was changed again to reflect the new family name. Then, when he was 9 it was changed again, back to his mother's maiden name. Talk about confusing.
Last week, The Ex changed her name on Facebook to what will be her new married name, when she gets married next year. I'm not sure why she changed it so soon. But this leaves The Kid floating in a very strange place. His mom is moving on, and quite quickly. She's already using her new name. His grandparents, who share his last name, have been going through a divorce for the past several months (I haven't blogged about this because I truly feel it is none of my business, but the fact is relevant here). He is angry at them, and hasn''t spoken to his grandfather, the patriarch, in nearly a year.
We have a fairly unusual last name. Yesterday, The Kid said to me, "There's only three of us in the whole world. Me, you and dad." He's been writing his name using his father's last name on his schoolwork. He refers to himself as The Kid Dadslastname. Although he talks about changing his name back all the time, he's scared to initiate the change. I'm guessing there's some loyalty issues there. And there's the issue of the kids at school questioning all these changes.
And The Husband is nervous to initiate the change as his ex can be batshit crazy at times. What will the backlash be? Are we going to end up back in court? Is the relative peace of the past year going to be blown away?
He's trying to just let things happen organically, but let's face it: all of these changes The Kid has been through haven't been very organic. The Husband's not sure what to do; all he does know is that he needs to do what is best for The Kid.

And, on a somewhat related note, here's a little story about the irony of the name change ordeal:
I'm certain that The Ex changed The Kid's name for two main reasons: 1.) To hurt her ex, and 2.) to ensure that everyone knew The Kid was hers and not mine (or any other partner the Then Boyfriend might acquire). Well, this past winter we went away for a few long weekends. And all the hotels asked for the name of all guests staying in the room, not just the person who made the reservation. At each and every hotel we stayed at, the concierge assumed that the child was mine and not The Husband's. Since we share a name, and he has a different last name. The same thing happened at several activities we did while away. I was always quick to correct them and dispel any awkwardness The Kid might feel. But in my head, I was saying, "Ha. Hahahahahaha! Fail!" to The Ex. (There's always a bit of gratification in seeing her best laid plans backfire...)

I am sorry. It must have hurt your husband terribly. Why does she have to be so hateful? Sad, really.

To cause the least amount of waves with The Ex, I would think that any name change would best be initiated by The Kid. You and his dad should try to remain neutral, but support The Kid if it's what he wants to do.

It seems kind of silly for Ex to be already using a new married name, unless they are secretly wed already.

I think you should back the Kid up on what he decides... if he wants to do it, then support him, but if he doesn't want to, then don't push it. At this rate I am expecting BM to what to change the Kid's last name to her new husbands! It is pretty stupid for the kid to have a different last name than both of his parents. Maybe just after the wedding would be a good time to broach the subject.

As far as already using her new name, it sounds like she is just trying to get attention, and is more into "getting married" than what being married is actually about.

@Sharon, that is exactly what I recommended to my husband. As for me? I'm staying out of it, except for relaying messages to The Husband from The Kid. I don't want to get implicated in this at all!

@Step-In, I agree about being focused on getting married. I think once the hype of the lightening fast relationship and the big fancy wedding is over, and they jump right into trying to conceive etc. they're going to have a hell of a reality to deal with.

Has the Kid said anything to anyone else about wanting to change his name? I'm with you on that your husband should definitely back the kid up in whatever it is he's like. Who knows, when he's 18 and can legally do so he might just do it again anyway.

I agree with what Sharon mentioned - if possible the name change should be initiated by The Kid. And if it's what he wants, then be supportive - which I'm certain his own mom won't be (unfortunately).

The Wicked Witch tried to pull this several years back with her daughter - and my BF said absolutely NOT! I'm actually surprised that she asked. Their daughter already has his last name, but she asked him if she could change it after they split.

I agree with pretty much what everyone else said...

We have issues with last names too... so you're not alone & neither is The Kid...

I can relate to this 100%, the son does not share our last name either. He never has, since Hubbs wouldnt marry PEG when she found out she was pregnant she kept the sons name as her last name all to hurt Hubbs. It is sad really, the son is a very large part of our life, Hubbs is involved as much as he can be taking into considerating the fact we live 12 hours away. PEG always promised to move to where we lived since she had no roots, no job, it made the most sense. Of course that will not happen now. After we got married, I think PEG feared we woudld fight for custody so within a couple of months she bought a dog (we have 2) and just purchased a house. Dont get me wrong, I am so glad the son gets to live in a house, but I am sad she didn't move closer to us. It would have been so much better for the son. Recently we have updated our will's and life insurance policies and I cringe everytime I have to wrote the son's full name. I hate having to deal with anything PEG and writing his last name makes me do just that. She is getting serious with her BF, they bought the house together and she is already referring to her someday husband etc. Where will the son be then?
We asked the attorney if we could get it changed since he is only 3 but she seemed to think it wouldnt be very easy and it could open up another can of worms so hubbs and I agreed to wait and do it if PEG takes us to court. We shall see, I know time might work this out, but I dont want the son to be left out. I want him to carry on his fathers last name, not his mother's father. It is completely stupid of PEG.
I wish you all the luck, I would support the son and do what you can, I thought about just asking PEG if she would agree to change it. If its not taking her to court, maybe she wouldnt go so badshit crazy. Who knows, hard to tell. Keep me posted though, I am really curious to see how it all plays out.
